Tom Shanks

Data engineer and geographer based in Denver, Colorado.

I work where data engineering and geography overlap. In consulting that has meant NFIRS hazard-data migrations for fire departments, PostGIS warehouses for emergency management, healthcare ETL on AWS Redshift and dbt, and a sanctions-screening pipeline that matches OFAC lists against live AIS vessel positions. Most of that is Python and SQL. The Rust is for the parts that have to run fast.

I studied geography at CU Denver, focused on urban planning and disaster resilience, and picked up engineering by building the systems my analysis work kept needing. The projects on this site run on my own hardware: an ADS-B receiver that has logged over a million aircraft messages and a tree-crown classifier built from free LiDAR and satellite data.
